Cheongsam

Co-chairs: Ming Lie, Muriel Tsang

Cheongsam Committee continues to offer our members fun and enjoyable events with special privileges. We would like to thank you for the great turnouts to a special Cheongsam event on December 8th. We met with two dynamic designers in quaint Sheung Wan. Grace Choi, the founder of Yi-ming, designs on exquisite contemporary East-meets-West style cheongsam and accessories. Herman Lee, an architect turned designer,  the founder of L'impression du temps on algorithmic pattern design for quintessential fabric and wallpaper. Many enthusiastic members joined us for shop tours and talk given by Grace and Herman with light refreshments, drinks, special 20% discounts off merchandise and souvenirs to bring home to celebrate the Holiday Season.

We have made Cheongsam the dress code and the theme for the AGM on June 22, 2018. We were pleased to welcome Grace Choi of Yi-ming for a sharing session at the AGM dinner.

Following our successful kick-off event, Demonstration on Cheongsam Flower Buttons 派花鈕 Luncheon on April 23, 2016 at the China Club, Cheongsam Committee is excited to announce that we have embarked on another major journey in 2017: Design of our own FIDA Floral Button for members.

With a view to cultivate and promote an interest in Cheongsam to our members, our Cheongsam Committee has kicked off the Year of the Monkey with a Cheongsam Talk and Demonstration on Cheongsam Flower Buttons 海派花鈕 Luncheon on April 23, 2016 at the China Club.

We were excited to have the Cheongsam expert, Dr. Brenda Li as the commentator and Ms. Po Ming Wah (華姐), as the demonstrator on the making of Cheongsam buttons.

The feedback was overwhelming and our Talk will be featured in Apple Daily.

華姐 has learnt how to make “flower-buttons” at the workshop where her father was employed as a cheongsam tailor. She is the last surviving veteran maker of flower-buttons of Shanghai tradition (海派花鈕) in Hong Kong. Last year marks 華姐's 50th anniversary in the trade.

華姐gave us a most unforgettable demonstration on the making of exquisite cheongsam buttons that exemplifies the mastery in海派花鈕, the identical demonstration she had given in Taipei for the exhibition “A Century of Fashion: Hong Kong Cheongsam Story” (百年時尚:香港長衫故事). 華姐 also showcased some of her recent collections.

I am very honoured that Ms. Susanna Siu (蕭麗娟), the Executive Secretary of Antiquities and Monuments Office, Hong Kong SAR, gladly accepted my invitation to attend the Cheongsam event, and has promised us to give our members a talk on Hong Kong Cultural Development with a glimpse into the Cheongsam Culture.  This is a much anticipated Cheongsam event which shall take place later in this year.
